To recognize the huge contributions of Filipino nurses in public health services, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has announced that registered nurses in the country may now apply for accreditation as providers of maternity care, newborn care and normal spontaneous delivery packages in accredited birthing homes.

PhilHealth has called on registered nurses to become professional health care providers for the three packages in PhilHealth accredited birth clinics.

Accredited nurses will receive payment for services rendered to PhilHealth members who availed of the MCP, NCP or NSD packages. Aside from the mentioned services, they may also provide services for family planning benefits conducted and get reimbursement from primary care facilities including intra-uterine device (IUD) insertion and Subdermal Contraceptive Implant Package.

These additional services are subject to additional requirements such as trainings, though.

According to Dr. Celestina Ma. Jude P. Dela Serna, PhilHealth President and Chief Executive Officer, “They are among the promoters of primary health care, acting as frontliners in communities to deliver public health services. By accrediting these nurses, we are assured that the quality of service that they provide to mothers and newborns in birthing homes are of the desired and expected quality.”

To be a PhilHealth accredited nurse, you should be able to fulfill the following requirements:

1. Nurse must be a licensed practitioner.
2. Must have completed training on Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care from Department of Health (DOH) institutions.

5. Must be and active PhilHealth member with qualifying premium contributions at the time of application.

He or she must also comply with the rules and guidelines set in the Performance Commitment that they will sign with PhilHealth. A nurse may be affiliated with a maximum of three PhilHealth-accredited on-hospital birthing facilities.

Once accredited, he or she will be subjected to a performance monitoring in accordance with the Health Care Providers – Performance Assessment System as stated in PhilHealth Circular 2016-0026.

If you qualify, you may file your applications to the Regional or Local Health Insurance Offices in your location.
